ALL COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION 1

PAURIC MAHONY POINTS THE GUNNERS TO VICTORY ONCE AGAIN

BALLYGUNNER 3-23 DUNGARVAN 0-16

County champions Ballygunner recorded their second win from as many outings in the All County Division 1 hurling league at the Dungarvan club grounds last Friday evening. Pauric Mahony, who got a late call up to play, dominated the first half scoreboard with 0-9(7f) after his name before being called ashore at the start of the final quarter.  Mahony also set up scores for his team mates as the Gunners were always in charge of proceedings.

Ballygunner fielded a strong enough side with the additions of Pauric Mahony, Shane O Sullivan and Conor Sheahan from the Mt. Sion game the previous week while Dungarvan were without their injured full back John Curran and their goalie for the past ten years, Darren Duggan who has emigrated to Australia.

Certainly, you need a full deck of cards when  playing the nine in a row times County champions and this was the case here. The winners led at half time by 0-13 to 0-6 with Conor Sheahan, Mikey Mahony and Cormac Power assisting Pauric Mahony on the scoreboard.

Johnny Burke was accurate from placed balls for the home team and Jack Fitzgerald and Eoin O Callaghan scored from play.

SECOND HALF

The game was put to bed at the start of the second half when Gunners’ wing forward Conor Sheahan breached the Dungarvan defence for a fine goal.   The Blues replied with five of the next six scores per Burke(2f), Ryan Donnolly, Conor Sheridan and Eoin O Callaghan, 1-14 to 0-11.

This is as good as it got though for Eoin Cadogan’s charges as following Pauric Mahony’s final pointed free,  Cormac Power claimed a second goal for the winners.  Conor Sheahan brought his game tally to 1-3, answered by scores for Dungarvan by Johnny Burke (f) and Jack Fitzgerald before Jake Foley found the net for the third time for Ballygunner, 3.16 to 0-12.

Before the final whistle, midfielder Eoin O Brien, sub Kealan Furlong(2), Cormac Power(2) and Mikey O Mahony(2f) added to the winners’ tally while Colm Curran0-2(1f) and Johnny Burke 0-2f finished the home team’s account of 0-16.

COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION 1

YOUNG ABBEYSIDERS WIN LOCAL LEAGUE DERBY

ABBEYSIDE 2-13 DUNGARVAN 2-12

A pointed free by elder statesman Michael O Halloran in added time earned Abbeyside a 0-1 win over local rivals Dungarvan at a  very well attended Burgery grounds venue last Friday evening.

The main talking point was how young the Abbeyside team were with the majority of their players coming out of the 2022 minor and under 20 grades. Such local derbies draw the crowds and this was no different between two evenly matched teams which perhaps may bear little resemblance to their championship sides later in the year.

Eoin Kiely opened the scoring for the winners from a placed ball after six minutes with Dungarvan’s best player on the night, Colm Curran equalising from play shortly afterwards.

The home side got a timely boost at the end of the first quarter when a long delivery from the impressive Jack McGrath went all the way to the Dungarvan net.  Johnny Burke pointed his first free for the visitors but his side were kept on the backfoot for the rest of the half in dropping eight deliveries short into the grateful hand of Abbeyside’s capable netminder Lar Power.

Michael Maher made a welcome return to the Abbeyside colours and pointed from play in a trade of scores with Colm Curran (f) followed by further scores by the winners centre back Billy O Connell, a fine strike and similarly again by Colm Curran whose scoring was keeping his side in touch, 1-3 to 0-4.

In the 27th minute, Lar Power made a great save from Eoin O Callaghan at the end of a fine Dungarvan move  and then a speedy Mark Twomey placed Darragh Walsh for the first of the last three points of the half by the Villagers, 1-4 to 0-4. Jack McGrath added to his earlier goal with a long range score and Michael O Halloran began to find his range from placed balls before the break, 1-6 to 0-4 with Abbeyside firmly in control on the scoreboard.

SECOND HALF

Dungarvan got the perfect start to the new half with Eoin O Callaghan rattling the Abbeyside net at the end of   good team work by Colm Curran and second half sub Tristan Loftus. Abbeyside sub Cathal Sweeney steadied his team with a well taken score but Dungarvan claimed the next four scores via Eoin O Callaghan and Johnny Burke, 0-3(2f), the blues in front for the first time in their best patch, 1-8 to 1-7.

Burke scored again from play, sandwiched between a brace of Abbeyside scores by Cathal Sweeney and Michael O Halloran(f), level at 1-9 each before Dungarvan sub Ryan Donnolly scored a point of real quality from the wing.

Jack McGrath levelled the game for the fifth occasion before his midfield partner Daire Slevin edged Abbeyside ahead once more, 1-11 to 1-10. The see saw nature of this enjoyable local derby continued with Ryan Donnolly quickest to react to a dropping ball from a Cathal Curran free, 2-10 to 1-11 and Johnny Burke completed a Dungarvan 0-8 turn around with his sixth score.

Dungarvan’s lead was short lived though as sub Ruairi Conway was quickest to react to a ball dropping dead in front of the Blues’ goal, level once more with time ebbing. Michael O Halloran(f) edged the winners ahead with Cathal Curran picking up a David Flynn puck out in defence to equalise with a great strike from a distance, 2-12 each.

In the last play, the game looked to be heading for a draw but a needless free in the Dungarvan defence gave Michael O Halloran the chance to win it for the home side and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

A very enjoyable and sporting  local derby so with the impressive refereeing of referee Tony Larkin adding to the occasion.
